Description

Tousled sunset red hair falls down around the shoulders of this woman, subtle highlights of gold and orange worked through the strands. Thick lashes outline warm hazel eyes, set in a classic oval face with sculpted cheekbones and lips tinted with just a touch of color. Her complexion is pale, with a delicate smattering of freckles under a light tan.

A bit more than average in height, her figure is both willowy and lithe, with a subtle, self-assured grace; feminine without being too curvy, toned without being overtly muscular.

She is dressed in a pair of faded jeans with a worn brown leather belt, as well a moss green screen-printed t-shirt. Short sleeved with a scoop collar, the t-shirt has in large fancy script - I'D HIT THAT, below that in much smaller print - I'll go get my Bat. Around her neck is leather cord holding what looks to be a large tooth of some kind. Possibly alligator. Under the flared legs of her jeans she wears boots of scuffed brown leather, their rounded toes and blocky heels just visible.

A creased and battered tan cowboy hat is perched on her head, pulled low over her eyes.

3rd Infantry Division Command
Forward to Initiative Command for Evaluation

On the night of 27 JUL 07 at or around 21:45 hours a cargo transport conveying medical equipment and supplies experienced engine trouble on a stretch of uninhabited frontage road in MND-C. During the course of field repairs, the unit was attacked by an unknown number of assailants believed to be - based on the descriptions given by the surviving team members - Hostile Sub-Terrestrials. Two of the HST's were dispatched, one soldier killed, and three others wounded. The wounded were triaged, and once reinforcements arrived, MEDEVAC to the nearest medical facility. As of this date, PFC Nicolas Thomas is known to be deceased. SGT Jared Perry, CPL Savannah S. Cross, and PFC Andrew Lemont are among the wounded.

JES: Corporal Cross - I can call you Savannah, can't I?

SSC: No Sir, that's not my name Sir. Savannah Sunshine, my Mama was real clear on that. But y'all can call me Sunny, most folks do.

JES: Ok, Sunny then. Tell me about your family Sunny; are you close to them?

SSC: Yes Sir, real close like. My Daddy, well, he died a few years ago - heart attack you know? But my Mama, she's livin' in Memphis now and we talk real often. My brothers - well, they're brothers after all!

JES: I imagine having - how many, four brothers? I imagine that made things difficult for you as a child.

SSC: I suppose you could be sayin' that, but it weren't so terrible, Sir. Oh, we got in more 'n our share of scrapes and arguments as kids, but we looked out for one another too. Especially after Daddy passed, and Mama lost the ranch. We all pitched in like.

JES: Why did you join the Armed Forces Sunny?

SSC: Well, I won't lie. It wasn't exactly my first choice. But Justin was already in college, an' Nathan was getting' in quite a bit of trouble with the law. Mama was real worried what to do with me and the two younger boys. Weren't no scholarships comin', that's for sure - I always was more the 'hand's on' type, not real big on books and studying. Don't get me wrong though, Sir. I ain't never had second thoughts about it, even after …

JES: After your injury?

SSC: Yes Sir.

JES: Tell me again about how it happened, Sunny.

SSC: Yes Sir.

SSC: We were on transport duty, and you know how nothin' ever seems to work right. Damn sand gets into everything, nothin' gets service when it should, parts don't show up or it's the wrong thing. Our vehicle broke down right after nightfall. Wasn't no new thing, I'd fixed it before. So I was underneath tryin' to get it runnin' again when I heard the screamin' start.

JES: Who was screaming Sunny?

SSC: It was Thomas Sir; Private Thomas. He was screamin' and then I heard the gunfire. I slid out from under the transport right quick, but things were happening so fast. Thomas was down with somethin' on top of him, an' he weren't movin'. Sergeant Perry had one down, but they were too close together to risk firing. I heard some of the others, but didn't see none of 'em. Then something was comin' at me, and I brought my weapon up. I kept shootin', but it kept on comin' even though I could see it jerk when the bullets hit it, see it bleedin'. That just ain't right sir - must've taken half a clip and it kept comin' at me!

JES: And then what happened Sunny?

SSC: It … I don't know, they're callin' it a HST but it looked right enough like a man to me, 'cept his face … it was all wrong. Evil. Blood all over its face. I think it must have been the one that took down Private Thomas, but damn! It must have moved fast to get to me like that! It picked me up, threw me against the side of the transport like I didn't weight more n' a kitten. I landed all wrong, I knew things were broken all inside, but it didn't hurt yet - they say it happens like that sometimes with a broken back. Lost my rifle, my fingers were scrabblin' in the dirt for something - anything. Got ahold of this broken branch, and I swear he - it - ran right onto the end of it. And poof, just exploded like! Sergeant Perry, he called in the attack, kept me from movin' until the medics came. He was pretty messed up himself, and Thomas … Thomas didn't make it Sir.

JES: What's your condition now Sunny?

SSC: The doctors say I'm stable. Likely won't walk again on my own.

JES: Have they explained the procedure that's been proposed in your case?

SSC: Yes Sir. Can't say I understand all the details, but they tell me I'm an excellent candidate. That if things go right I'll walk again. That I'll be better, faster; be able to do things that I couldn't before.

JES: And you understand that the procedure is experimental? There are things that could go wrong; complications that haven't been resolved as yet.

SSC: Yes Sir, and I'm alright with that Sir. I can't imagine myself like this. I knew there were risks when I enlisted, I'm not afraid to take a chance.

CPL Cross has satisfactorily completed recovery and rehabilitation, and been released to her initial duty station for field training and observation. Cybernetic implantation seems to have been accepted without undue stress to underlying physiological systems; however, ongoing monitoring will be required. The interface between the artificial synapses and the subject's nervous system is not as complete as initially hoped, but the regiment of supplemental neurotransmitters that have been prescribed should keep operations within acceptable parameters.

Additionally, subliminal programming has been successfully assimilated during the indoctrination process. Subject is unaware of the command prompts incorporated into the neural enhancements, and should not retain active memory of duties carried out while under orders.

CPL Cross has been led to believe that the resulting 'blackouts' are a normal side effect associated with the experimental nature of the procedures she has undergone.
