Background
So, technically, I'm not even American. My parents are from Romania…they're Romany and were with one of the circuses there. Then, when they were casting for Cirque du Soleil, they moved to Canada so they could be a part of that. They were married just before they left and I was born in 1990. So, technically, I'm a dual citizen of Romania and Canada…but I've lived in Vegas since I was three years old. My parents wanted something kind of stable as I was getting older, I guess, so when they went to open 'Mystere', they wanted to be a part of that so they could settle down. That's really the basic just of it all and how we got here. My parents are still with the troupe…still performing, like…every night, which is just fine by me!
See, my parents are…weird. Not just because they can juggle fire and do backflips in hoops and on ribbons dangling from trapezes or something. They're weird because…well, they are. Ok, so they're like…40 years old and almost completely covered in tattoos…which the Circus loves! They also have all these piercings and dye their hair…my parents are total Goth Punks. I mean…total. Our house is decorated like Dracula's castle…there are coffins and crosses and skulls and spiders everywhere. Ugh…the spiders! They -totally- squick me out. Luckily, most of the spidery things are now in their room since they know that I hate those things, but…ok, so black and blood red walls? The fact that my parents wear all black all the time? Even my dad wears eyeliner! It's embarrassing!
There are all these pictures of when I was a kid…my parents dressed me like I was in the Addams Family or the Munsters…and they wouldn't let me cut my hair. I remember when I was about 8 or so and I went over to a friend's house and they were going to get his hair cut…I got mine too. My parents were super-pissed off at that, but I felt free! I didn't have to be like them…I could be myself. Thus began the battle.
Luckily, they were performing a lot, so I had a good deal of time to myself. In High School, one of my friends helped me dye my hair blonde…which I now do as often as I can. One, because it pisses my parents off to no end, and two…it's about as anti-Goth as you can get. Granted, my real hair is so dark that the roots start showing after a week or so, but it's my hair, right? I also dress about as anti-Goth as I can find. It's a sort of…opposite-rebellion, I guess. Instead of rebelling against my parents' clean-cut image, I'm the clean-cut one. Call it what you will, I don't want any tattoos or piercings or leather collars or spikes or combat boots!
Thing is, I'm also trying to hide my own weirdness. High School was the time that I started looking into the Wicca religion. Ok, so…Romany are all like, Eastern Orthodox or something and my parents, oddly enough, are kind of religions. So even though they're all skulls/coffins/black, they go to Church. Which is fine, but…it just wasn't for me. We talked a little about it in one of my classes and I remembered doing some more research into it and finding it kind of…well, cool. It's all about nature and the magic is supposed to be beneficial and help others. So…I started reading more about it. I started looking for shops that had books and ingredients and crystals and such and I began experimenting. Oddly enough, some of teh stuff started working! Magic is real, boys and girls, and I can do stuff with it. It's rather heady…maybe some of it's from my Romany blood or what.
Of course, I've also been trying to not let on that I talk to dead people. No, seriously. I've been able to since I could talk, I think…maybe before then. My parents say they often saw me talking to people who weren't there or wanting to pet animals that they didn't see. I mean, it hasn't changed. I'll see people and have a conversation only to have someone come up to me and ask why I was talking to the air. A couple have tried to spook me (and succeeded) and I've been haunted a couple of times, but most of the ghosts that I've met so far have just been sort of lost and confused.
So…yeah. I guess I can't really escape my own weirdness, but I can sure try to not look like one..I guess?
