Background
My name is Laurel Yeung, I'm twenty-one years old, and I was born on a particularly hot July 4th. That's not exactly the best way to be born, but considering what's happened, I figure it was just a portent of doom. I'm the eldest of three, and have two younger brothers. My parents, especially my father, Lawrence (Li-Hao) Yeung, doted on me since I can remember. I was born here in Las Vegas, and for the most part, I grew up here, so yes I'm use to the insane 130 weather during the summer. Dad is an economics professor at the local university, and mom is now a retired showgirl. Dont ask me how they met, but I do recall the words drunken grad student in their stories.
Oh well, time to move on, right? I've always been a hyperactive little girl, ever since I can remember. It was one day that I was running around in the backyard playing with my brothers did one of dad's colleagues take an interestin me. He was a good neighbor and he was a new professor of anthropology at the university. He had a really thick British accent, and he went up to me and started testing my reflexes. I thought it was kind of weird, but he'd throw things at me to see if I could catch it. Of course I could catch it. I was way more athletic than my brothers anyway. I seemed to have caught his interest though, and soon he spent more and more time with us.
Since dad and mom would be working late at nights, the professor often babysat us. That's when things got weird (no, not in a creepy child molester sort of way). By this time, I had begun calling him Uncle Alex since he was always around. Well, Uncle Alex, as a professor of anthropology would tell us stories during bed time. These stories werent your usual damsel in distress princess and some handsome prince goes to save her. No, these were stories of a time long ago when there were dark forces about, dark dangerous forces that would prey on the weak. In every single story, the protagonist was a young woman who would fight for her people. She would fight against the darkness for long as she could until eventually another girl became the heroine of the story. Back in those days he didnt tell me what happened when a girl 'passed on' the duty, but I just figured she'd retire with a handsome prince somewhere (hey, I was little!).
Stories like this would continue even into my later elementary school years. It was on my tenth birthday did he finally reveal something. He gave me a large leather bound tome with the word 'Vampyr' on it. I thought it was a bit morbid, but he revealed that these stories were true, and that each girl had a responsibility to protect those from the forces of evil, and eventually I might become that girl. I was floored to say the least, but I was intrigued as well. He then explained to me why he was here. He was part of a group called the 'Watcher's Council' and they had identified me as a potential Slayer. My training was to begin almost immediately after that.
Training began in earnest later that day. After school I would immediately report to him for 'extracurricular' activites. I still have no idea how he convinced my parents to let me spend time along with him, but we were often in his house (my parents must have been really trusting). Rudimentary fencing, sword fighting, and hand to hand combat begun. I'd end up bruised on occasion, but I knew better than to show my parents. I hid these bruises and would go back. Alex was a tough task master. We'd be training physicially while he'd 'lecture' on the weaknesses of various demons and vampires. A Slayer's asset should be her sharp mind. It should be sharper than the stake she wields, he said constantly. It was only after my body was physically exhausted would we work late into the night memorizing facts on various forces of evil to where I would be able to identify them on sight. Of course, I hadnt run into any bad guys at this point, so to me, all of this was still a fantasy.
That is until I started high school. I was walking home late when something grabbed me and bit me! It hurt like hell, but I knew what it was. It was a newly awakened vampire hungry and well, I took advantage of it's baser instincts. It was my first dusting, and I wasnt even an active Slayer. The thrill was incredible, and when I went back to Alex's he helped me out. It was then that training doubled as there were active vampires around, and since I was still a potential I had to learn to better fight them without the intended powers I was going to receive. And I waited, and waited.
I was about to graduate high school, and I still hadnt been activated. I had fought weakling vampires and had survived, but by this point the chances of my 'activation' were getting slimmer and slimmer. He was still going to stay with me just in case as he was my assigned 'Watcher', but we started thinking about my future at that point. College was soon and I had gotten into the University of Washington at that point and wanted to go. It was going to be a change of pace, and he even suggested that I take my studies seriously and eventually apply to become a Watcher myself. That was an interesting concept, and I had liked learning, so I gave it serious thought and eventually matriculated as a dual history and chemistry major.
The first two years of college were uneventful. There I was entering as part of the high school class of 2005 and went off to Seattle to begin a new sort of training. College academia. It was fun. I made friends, made stupid decisions and still kept up my training occasionally on the side. Alex was able to finagle an adjunct position there to continue my training. It was the end of my second year that something happened.
There I was going to Alex's place for a bit of training, like we always did. However, when I went to his place I found it broken into. I was worried and immediately grabbed the nearest thing I could have when I was tackled from behind. It was a gruesome priest with his eyes sewed shut. I was struggling and fighting for my very life when Alex came down and stabbed the priest. He was bloodied and bruised and was near death. I had no idea what was going on, but it seems something was out to eliminate the line of Slayers. I dont exactly remember everything he said, but he told me to take his car and go to Sunnydale. Potentials were going there to be protected by the current Slayer, a Miss Buffy Summers. I packed everything I had and went and drove as far as I could. Fortunately it was summer vacation so I could justify this to my parents as a road trip of sorts. My life was on the line so they better damn well understand!
Throughout the entire trip, I was harassed by these weird demon priest things. I was on high alert and eventually I thought I was finished. They had tracked me down to Portland. I was hiding in a cabin, but I was taking a nap when they came. There were more of them, and I thought I was finished, that is, until it happened.
I felt a sudden surge of strength and remembering what they had done to Alex, I wiped the floor with them. In the end I was bloodied and bruised, but I was alive, they were not. I had been activated as a Slayer and I knew what it was my turn to do. However, as I later found out, I wasnt the only one. Every potential was activated. I didnt have to give up my life completely!
I eventualy met the famous Ms. Summers and Giles and took part of their intensive training camp in Rome. It was fun and I met girls there of all ages, and eventually they cleared me to be off. I wanted to finish school afterall, and that year in Rome 'studying' abroad was fun, but I eventually wanted to graduate and perhaps have some semblance of a normal life. So I graduated this past fall and now I'm back in Las Vegas. I'm with the Teach for America program teaching high school chemistry. Little does anyone know that at night, I prowl the streets trying to make sure people are safe, hey, I didnt say I gave up being a Slayer, I wanted to have my cake and eat it too.
