Background

The Twoyoungmen Family has always had a special connection with the spirit world. Originally from the Great North of the Sarcee Tribes, generations of Twoyoungmen have served as mediators between the spirit world and the regular world. The hierarchy of the spirits, the quin'on'a, various nature spirits; the honochen'o'keh, servants of the elders; and the rathe'wen'a, the eldest and most powerful spirits that had often warred with each other. Many years ago, one of the rathe'wen'a, Ketq Skywaye, otherwise known as Grandmother Toad had chosen one of my ancestors to serve as her avatar in the physical plane to protect the people from the Great Beasts of the North, rathe'wen'a of Mal'ek'a, The Dread-That-Walks-Nameless. He was charged with the duty of binding spirits who were freed from their prisons as to not cause natural disasters. Additionally, he was to become a servant to the chosen of the various animal totems, always helping them whenever they needed it. But with it came strict rules of conduct. As her servant, he could never partake in the flesh of an animal for sustenance, a strict vegetarian diet was needed. He could never lie, cheat, steal, or do anything that would otherwise sully his honor, lest Grandmother Toad remove her blessings and move onto to another. And so for generations, my family has served her while fighting and bindnig the Great Beasts of the North. Now, I am her chosen champion in this plane, and here is my story.

I was born and twenty two years ago in Alberta, Canada. My father was a doctor, Joseph Twoyoungmen, and the brother of my uncle, Michael Twoyoungmen, shaman of our people and of Grandmother Toad. It was a good and simple life. I went to school, did what I could and I would always go to my uncle who would share the stories of our people. He was preparing me, even at a young age for what my destiny would eventually be.

I was an active child, running around and playing as much as I could. Watching the Olympics one year made me want to become an olympic level athlete, and thus my father enrolled me in gymnastics lessons. It was fun and I enjoyed myself greatly, practicing when I can as I'd cartwheel in our backyard.

As I played, I had 'imaginary' friends. They werent really imaginary, but they were the local spirits, the quin'on'a of the land. My father had always thought I had an overactive imagination, but still, I played with them. They taught me things and shared stories..wondrous stories of the creation of the world, the fight between Grantmother Toad and The Dread, and how there were shamans from all over serving as mediators and binders of spirits in order to keep the balance. Little did I know that these were the beginnings of my lessons..my initiation into my chosen path, and throughout the years, I would slowly realize what they were.

As I got older, my uncle saw me playing with my 'friends'. I thought he wouldnt notice them, but he saw them as well, and considering I could see them quite easily, he knew I was to be his successor. He informed me about my destiny, and soon the spirits did as well, and taught me the ancient Sarcee magics of the land and our people. The hierarchy of spirits, the truth about the darkness that resides outside our lands, and all those who fought against it, those became my lessons. The spirits took a more active interest and taught me more and more secrets of the night, the Wendigo, the Vampires, and the Totem Warriors. They explained that it was to be my duty to aid these warriors of the night as their advisor, as their vizier, for I was to be a champion of Grandmother Toad..when and if I passed the test.

Thus, my training began in earnest. I was pulled out of school and homeschooled by my uncle and the spirits. We wandered the lands and he introduced me to various spirits to learn from. Years would pass and eventually, I was to take the test. He muttered a spell and brought out his medicine pouch. He told me to peer inside, and when I did,I was sucked into the depths of a black void.

I was fifteen. I knew the rituals of my people, but could not quickly use the magics as my uncle had. I found myself in a cave and heard voices. I was to prove my worth if I was going to become the avatar of Grandmother Toad.

It seemed like an eternity, but I wandered the depths of the cave. Eventually I saw light and everything was beautiful. The buffalo were stampeding and there was an old woman in the path. I had to save her. I ran as quickly as I could. My legs became stiff, but I still ran as fast as I could. My heart raced as I gasped for air, but I did. Soon enough, I was running as fast as the buffalo and even faster as I brought her out of the way just in time.

However, that was not all. A pack of wolves were the cause of the stampede. And since I was an easier target, along with the woman, they attacked. They scratched, and they bit. I had to fight them off. I beat them off with a stick, and in the end I was bruised, bloodied and what I thought was near death. I had failed my test. Or so I thought.

The woman was Grandmother Toad herself, and we were in the spirit realm. This was my test, and I had passed. I did everything I could to save her from danger and thus, I had proved myself worthy of being bestowed her power. She gave me a circlet as my mark of her shaman and avatar. She taught me even more secrets, and eventually, I came out of the void and found myself in my uncle's house once more.

I had the circlet, the mark of her avatar, and my uncle was no longer her champion. He had passed on her secrets to the rightful heir and I was to fulfill my duty with him teaching me along the way.

Years would pass, and I would serve as binder of spirits, protecting my people from the dangers of the Great Beast of the North. Fortunately, I had time to go to school, and I would eventually receive my bachelors in archaeology from the local university. But then..I had an urge..a dream to go to Las Vegas. Something was going to happen, and soon the chosen of the various animal totems would need aid..serious aid.

So, I moved down to Las Vegas and enrolled in the masters program for library science. Now I am a librarian at the local library and I watch and wait for the totems to reveal themselves. I will protect them. I will aid them. I will fulfill my duty and serve as a binder of spirits. Meanwhile, I know that Mal'ek'a waits, with his minions. They too have come down here. Las Vegas will be a battleground. Now is the time to fight..
