Background
Jonah was born and raised in Vegas. His father was a mechanic and his mother was a nurse. The only child of the two, Jonah would get all of the little attention the two could afford him. Money was always tight, which meant that the both of them worked long hours. Jonah was watched by family members, when they could. Other times he'd spend time at the garage with his father, or at the hospital with his mother. Alone most of the time, Jonah picked up books. he had an affinity for electronics and gadgets, and read every issue of Popular Mechanics that he could get his hands on. His parents indulged in his obsession, when they could, buying him electronics hobby kits. He'd built a transistor radio, and even a rudimentary set of walkie-talkies. Jonah's grades were good, though not as spectacular as his teachers thought they should be. Many progress notes were sent home with messages of 'Not living up to potential'. Jonah's parents, already realizing that their son had surpassed their intelligence, could not really do much to help. The only thing that they could think of, was to buy him a computer.
The computer seemed to be a key that unlocked even more potential. He was on the internet constantly. He'd picked up programming languages, and he'd even taken the computer apart a few times, just to learn what it was like on the inside. This upset his parents, but once he'd shown them that he put everything back, and didn't destroy the machine that they'd barely afforded, they'd only grounded him for a week, Jonah was a fairly happy kid, despite his meager background. As a teenager, angst wasn't in his vocabulary. He was often noted as being the 'class clown', but since he did well in class, his teachers would allow his 'antics' as long as they weren't too disrupting. In high school, Jonah played on the varsity baseball team, and kept in good shape. He also took advanced placement classes, keeping him about as busy as his parents. Jonah graduated and went off to UNLV majoring in Computer Engineering.
College life for Jonah was as normal as it is for anyone. Studying, tests, classes, partying, girls. He'd run the whole gamut, and came out of it a better man. After receiving his Bachelor's Degree, his parents had hoped for Jonah to get a good job in the tech industry. Instead, he'd enlisted in the Army. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were heating up, and recruiters were everywhere, UNLV being no exception. Jonah decided that before he can go off into the world to take what he could, he'd need to give what he could to his country. Jonah's father, a Vietnam War veteran, understood, though didn't like the decision. Jonah's mother was flat-out against it. After boot camp, Jonah's mother came around and was proud, though scared of what had awaited Jonah overseas.
Jonah could've put himself into a more tech-filled position, one that would keep him mostly out of danger, but Jonah considered that to be cowardly. He'd joined the Infantry, as a tech expert, and became a member of a squad that was patrolling through the mountains of Afghanistan. Their prime objective was to flush out caves and to clear out any Taliban groups that could be hiding in the region. Everything was fine until one day, the squad had entered a deep cave, bringing them down to what felt like the bowels of Earth. They kept searching, expecting the large size of the cave to be holding a massive group of enemies. When they reached the bottom, they didn't find a massive group of enemies, just one massive enemy. They had awakened some form of demon that had been dormant in the cave for centuries. It didn't wake up happy. The fight was brutal, and Jonah was the only surviving member of the squad to make it out alive. After he'd radioed for help, he'd witnessed the beast almost merging from the cave. An elite group of commandos had arrived, driving the demon back into the cave. Jonah never knew the final outcome of the battle, only that the good guys had won. After that, he was debriefed at length about the incident. Jonah's skills, plus his experienced was enough for the commando group, known as The Initiative, to recruit the man into their ranks. It was also the best way to keep him from spreading word of what had happened to the outside world. Jonah took this as an opportunity to make sure that what happened to his squad would never happen to anyone every again, and to ensure that those fallen had not died in vain.
After additional training and field exercises, Jonah was sent back to Vegas to join the Squad that was already established there. Jonah's considered to be retired from military life, but he unofficially holds the rank of Sergeant. his cover is that he's the new IT consultant for the High School, making sure that the computer labs are up and running. Besides using it as a cover, it was also jonah's job to keep an eye out for any HST-related activity in the school. After the incident in Sunnydale, High Schools looked like they would be areas teeming with new Slayers, and there were bound to be problems connected with that.
