Background

Jeff Brown was born to a quiet, unassuming family in a moderately middle-classed suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. One of three children, his childhood is marked by an absolute absence of what most people would think of as trauma. His parents (Bob and Jolene Brown) are good, hard-working people who are both still alive and well (and thanks to Pilates DVDs, getting fitter every day, thank you very much). His two sisters, Brenda and Jane, are happily married and working on careers of their own. His house didn't burn down. Werewolves didn't eat his dog. Vampires never visited his school and Bigfoot, alas, steadfastly refused to appear and kidnap Julie Schwartz, his childhood best friend. So, like every kid with a great life, he went looking for the spooky and supernatural.

Despite his best efforts, he never quite found it. Running around the neighborhood with a cross and mirror didn't uncover any vampires, even when he shoved both at unsuspecting neighbors. It did, however, provoke a long talk about cultural sensitivity from Julie's dad. Likewise, neither jabbing people with his grandmother's silver hat pin nor squirting them with garlic accomplished much beyond getting him suspended from grade school and a politely worded note from his principal suggesting therapy.

By junior high, Jeff had acquired a couple of nicknames: Spooky (after a certain TV FBI agent) and Encyclopedia (because everything was a mystery to him). He didn't mind, though. He knew the truth was out there, he just had to find it. Since none of the old methods worked, Jeff got into computers and electronics to try to catch his ghosts and ghouls. His lifelong love of gadgetry and geekery was the only useful byproduct there.

A killer combination of puberty, social pressure and introversion brought on by those two things made the early part of Jeff's teens pretty rough. He still had all the passion and belief for the supernatural he had before but was now mostly introverted, sharing his thoughts and doing research only on the Internet, in obscure chat rooms and on fringe blogs and IRC channels. His parents worried, but beyond forcing him to stay active by various activities (including karate classes at a local strip mall and swimming classes at the local youth center), they generally let him work his way through things.

Heading off for college was a blessing for Jeff. He didn't have the baggage of his childhood antics, since he enrolled at the University of North Las Vegas school of journalism. Living away from home was fun. And his idea of finding and exposing the supernatural undercurrents in modern society was refined to the idea of becoming a journalist and blowing the lid off the conspiracy of silence for all the world to see. Combined with his technophilia, this has led him to consider himself a 'New Media' type. A totally online, independent and unbiased source of information.

Now in his third year of undergrad studies, Jeff's Blog 'The Sleep of Reason' (mysterianblog.blogspot.com) gets several thousand hits a month as he reports on rumors, investigates supposed sites of monster sightings in the Las Vegas area and runs emailed 'interviews' with various fringe authors and 'eye witnesses' to events. He's still looking for that big break that will make him a household name, though. Any day now, he'll REALLY find out what's going on.

Jeff's blog, written under a pseudonym, is found at The Sleep Of Reason. It is entirely IC but would take some digging (and a +request presumably) to tie it to Jeff himself.
