Variable Drawback
Yep, you've got a monkey on your back. No, not a REAL one. But you're hooked on some physical subject. Could be anything from nicotine up to heavy drugs, but SOMETHING has you. In general, this Drawback imposes a penalty on any rolls equal to the cost of the Drawback, either because you're messed up from being ON it, or because you're messed up from withdrawal symptoms for NOT being on it.
At the start of any combat/research/etc session, if your character has the Addiction drawback they must roll 1d10 (+roll 0). If their result of the roll is equal to or less than the level of their Addiction drawback, they are determined to be either under the influence of, or suffering from not getting their fix of, their drug of choice.
In order to lessen or defeat their addiction, one must accumulate a total of 10 Success Levels in daily doubled Willpower rolls. Should a roll fail, then the addict subtracts SLs from their accumulated SLs and goes into withdrawal. Should the addict hit 0 SLs (or go into the negatives), they fail to overcome their addiction and do whatever it takes to get their fix.
For most drugs, the character in withdrawal suffers a penalty equal to the value of the drawback unless they get their fix or fight through the withdrawal. For more serious or severe drugs, there are also physical side effects: all physical actions are at a -3 penalty in addition to the mental penalty.
In general, a rough guideline for costs follows:
| Habitual Drinking, Smoking, or Caffeine Addiction: | 1 pt. |
| Heavy drinking or smoking, light use of marijuana or LSD: | 2 pts. |
| Heavy use of marijuana or LSD: | 3 pts. |
| Habitual use of barbiturates/cocaine: | 4 pts. |
| Habitual use of heroin, or heavy use of barbiturates/cocaine: | 5 pts. |
| Heavy use of heroin: | 6 pts. |
