Background

Ending up as a Healer is not what Abe had in mind for his life. He had a future mapped out that included such sweeping metaphysical goals as being popular, rich and maybe famous. It wasn’t that Abe wasn’t bright, he certainly is, it’s just that he was a fundamentally shallow person who, even when he did the right thing, tended to do it for the wrong reason.

Raised in Las Vegas by parents who are both mid-level executives at holding companies that own casinos, he had a comfortable childhood, verging on privileged. He attended Bishop Gorman High School and benefited both from the academics and nationally renowned athletic programs thereof. It was, in fact, his guidance councilor there who suggested that he punch up his academic record by doing a missionary trip over the summer of his junior year to make himself look more attractive to the colleges he wanted to attend.

Abe’s parents agreed and he found himself in Ecuador at seventeen, helping a local mission there try to rebuild a village flattened by an earthquake and suffering from famine and disease. And it was there that he was Called, when the previous Healer died. Dreaming of an old woman who told him he had to heal this village and then seek her out over the course of a few nights, Abe went from a largely useless assistant to a virtual doctor overnight. The missionaries, swamped beyond their ability to cope and the locals weren’t that inclined to look a gift miracle in the mouth as the young man worked tirelessly (seemingly literally) setting broken limbs, helping rebuild houses and generally making himself indispensable in the month that followed.

When it was time to return home, Abe found himself with the choice of seeking out the old woman in his dreams or going back to a comfortable life. After some soul-searching (and mystical prodding), he chose the latter and disappeared into the jungle. When he did eventually find his Beldame, it was in a village in the mountains of Peru that made the one he left look like a paradise. It was ravaged by ‘disease’, poor and hopeless. And in the center of it all, trying to hold things together was a very old witch named Estrella. Over the next six months, Estrella instructed Abe on the occult and various healing methods. She taught him how to ward the homes of the villagers, how to use magic to facilitate healing and how to use his new gifts to bring peace and understanding, as well as physical health to those around him. And she showed him that the ‘disease’ infecting the village was actually a vampire.

In the normal course of events, Abe might have been expected to either sacrifice his life for the village or find a non-violent way to handle to the situation. Unfortunately, the vampire decided that Estrella was a suitable victim. And Abe, pampered and sheltered for most of his life, discovered not just hard circumstances like those of everyday life for the poor South American villagers but true evil for the first time. And he decided he wasn’t going to stand still for it.

For the first time in perhaps a hundred years, a Healer became a warrior. And after a fight that led him to discover his regeneration abilities after being sliced nearly to shreds, Abe won and ended the plague on the village. He spent the next year of his life wandering in South and Central America. Picking up combat training from a bemused and drunken Ex-Watcher in Quito and learning ancient invocations to the lost gods of the Aztecs in Tenochtitlan, healing, exorcising demons and trying to promote peace, either traditionally or by removing the threat wherever he went.

Recently, Abe has had dreams in which the somewhat displeased Beldames are calling him back home, to Las Vegas, where he is supposed to receive guidance and a purpose. So, after almost two years away from home, Abe has returned to his old life, with thoughts of enrolling in UNLV as a pre-med student and finding ways to apply his gifts here. Of course, there are some problems with being estranged from all his old friends, with whom he has nothing in common these days and his understandably annoyed parents who still want to know where he's been, what he was doing and why he's ruined his life (from their viewpoint).
